real food for real people. snack food reviews, recipes and blog. blog contact about review: lance bolds buffalo wing blue cheese crackers posted by roatha on august 11th, 2015 in food and snacks · 2 comments if you haven?t figured it out, i?m just reviewing random snacks i already have in my work desk snack drawer. lance bolds buffalo wing blue cheese cracker sandwiches! the problem with most snacks that purport to be ?buffalo wing flavored? could equally be labelled as ?sorta tastes like hot sauce but not really? flavored?. i?m always left disappointed. how do these cracker sandwiches stack up? (get it? because you can stack them?) it?s a step in the right direction. they?re definitely tasty. there?s just a little heat, as you would expect from a mainstream snack food. the difference here is the addition of blue cheese. it adds some extra dimension to the standard hot sauce flavor. do they taste like eating at your local wing shack? no. but they?re a welcome distraction from staring at my computer screen all day.interesting note: i?ve been working out on my lunch breaks from time to time. i got back to my desk last week and thought ?man. i think i can smell my shoes. that?s so weird, they?re basically new. i guess i need to get some spray or something.? ten minutes later, i tracked down the smell. these crackers smell like funky shoes. but in a good way?? this article has 2 comments. click to view! review: cheez-it crunch’d posted by roatha on august 4th, 2015 in snacks · 1 comment alright folks, what do we have on the table today? cheez-it crunch’d! i’m going to be honest here. i’ve been wanting to try these out for months now, but i’ve been too cheap to actually spend 3 whole dollars on it. i guess it’s some weird hang up i should seek professional counsel for. would i have taken a shot at $2.50, probably. but at three whole dollars? are you out of your mind? but this article isn’t about me, it’s about this overly punctuated snack food.** let’s just get to it, are cheez-it crunch’d actually crunchy? yes. exceedingly so, actually. i bought them for my cubicle at work and i am terrified to eat them with anyone around because they’re so damn loud. they are the loudest chip/snack/cracker that i can ever remember eating. if i want to have one and any of my cube neighbors are nearby, i have to slowly soften the crunch’d with saliva before actually chomping down. kinda like a spider digesting its prey. or an old lady who’s forgotten her dentures. i personally prefer the first analogy. ok, so they’re crunchy. what about the other half of their grammatically abridged moniker? are they cheesy? yes. i?m really not a huge fan of classic cheez-its. to my tastes, standard cheez-its are overly salty and have a very flat cheese taste. basically, the goldfish’s less whimsical cousin. the crunch’d keep the classic cheddar flavor while toning the salt level down a notch. there’s almost a nacho-esque hint to the flavor, but not overly so. if you’re a cheez-its fan, i think you’ll enjoy it. if you’re a cheesy snack junky like i am, i would also give these the thumbs up. verdict: cheez-it crunch’d lives up to its name, delivering their classic cheesy flavor the loudest crunch i’ve ever experienced out of a snack. it’s a great snack for everywhere that isn’t your office cubicle where you sit right next the director of your department. **note: i finally picked these up for $1.00 at my local big lots. score! i’ll put the two dollars i saved towards my therapy sessions about unrealistic pricing expectations. this article has 1 comment. click to view! question- do you tip the restaurant owner? posted by roatha on october 1st, 2009 in musings and restaurants · 33 comments in the us, it’s generally accepted that when you eat at a restaurant, you must tip. the general guideline is 15-20%, more or less, and is based on the performance of the server. there are many differing opinions on gratuities, especially with individuals who have themselves been servers/waiters/waitresses. i like to eat at mom and pop restaurants. at many of these restaurants, the owner or family will be the one serving your food. after you meal, do you tip the owner? i feel uncomfortable tipping the owner of a restaurant. i feel like it’s almost an insult to the owner. tipping carries an underlying connotation of class structure. you tip people that serve you. by tipping someone, you are implying that (for this interaction at least) you are above them. this is further cemented by the accepted salary for waitstaff which is $2.13 an hour in texas. many waiters and waitresses depend on tips to make a living. i do not own a restaurant, but as an entrepreneur, i consider restaurateur to be a position of prestige. by tipping the owner, you are lowering the class of the owner. i may be way off base here, but i don’t believe a restaurateur goes into business expecting to make tips. you figure out your costs and other variables and set your prices to make a profit. the owner is not being paid $2.13 an hour. it’s stupid to assume that there aren’t restaurant owners out there that want/need that extra money. and if you like a restaurant, it makes sense that you want to help the restaurant stay afloat. i think a better policy would be to order extra food or dessert to go. bring this food to a friend with a business card or takeout menu. here’s the important part: be sure to tell the owner that you loved the food so much that you’re bringing some to a friend. you are supporting your local restaurant without tipping. even more so, you are spreading the word about the restaurant and potentially generating more business. do you think the owner would rather have your 5 bucks now or more people coming through the doors? do you think restaurant owners should be tipped? this article has 33 comments. click to view! how to make heinz 57 steak sauce posted by roatha on september 15th, 2009 in recipes and too cheap · 9 comments like heinz 57 sauce? in a pinch or don’t want to shell out the cash? here’s a (surprising) recipe to make a mock heinz 57 sauce: ingredients: 1/2 cup raisins 2/3 cup heinz ketchup 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp seasoned salt 4 oz applesauce 2 t wish bone itailian dressing directions: put all ingredients in blender and blend for 2 minutes on high or until smooth. enjoy! be sure to keep the sauce in a container in the fridge. this article has 9 comments. click to view! hydrive energy drink- kiwi strawberry posted by roatha on september 15th, 2009 in drinks · 14 comments picture taken in my global cultures class via laptop webcam, heh. ah, another energy drink review. must mean class has started up again! today we’re trying out hydrive energy - kiwi strawberry “alertness formula”. i picked it up in the market on ut arlington’s campus. i needed a pick me up and due to the campus’ recent switch to pepsi, i was having a little trouble. most of the issue was not being able to find a decent sugar free caffeine fix. i almost picked up a low carb no fear drink, but struggled with the concept of imbibing on a drink by a defunct walmart clothing line. as a last chance effort to avoid this, i checked the other side of the shop and ran across a section of hydrive energy drinks. at first glance, they seemed to have answered a number of pleas for energy drinks: low cal- it’s not sugar free, but has only 30 calories. $1.59- a lower price point is always happy. non-carbonated- sometimes i just can’t stomach harsh carbonation in the morning. it’s in a freaking reclosable bottle!- i actually have a conspiracy theory that drink companies want us to spill our drinks in class, go flat or warm up since we can’t close it and throw it in our backpacks. it’s warm, just buy another drink, right? thank you for thinking of me, hydrive. it has a good taste, though a tiny bit oversweetened, with a bit of sugar free aftertaste. you come to expect taste as an afterthought when it comes to energy drinks, but hydrive exceeds that expectation. wi
